Laurel Springs School personalized distance learning program for homeschool families offers a quality accredited education.

Home Schooling

Schooling your child at home is a wonderful experience, and our goal is to make this a fulfilling process for the entire family. We are dedicated to providing your child with customized curriculum, loving teachers, staff and directors, and a philosophy of education that honors each child's gifts and talents.

In most schools, a student's style of learning and interests are not taken into consideration. The child must fit the curriculum, rather than the curriculum fitting the child. At Laurel Springs, we take your child's interests, abilities, talents, and style of learning into consideration when designing home school curriculum choices for him. Our goal is to develop a program that fits your child intellectually, emotionally, developmentally, and even spiritually. When your child is in school, you may miss the opportunity to know how he or she learns best, to learn together, and to share in this day-to-day process of discovery. By choosing to homeschool, you can guide, nurture, and protect your child through this wonderful and challenging process.

The Best Investment

By participating in homeschooling we invest in the future by providing our family with protection, love, and learning opportunities. We allow children to establish primary bonds with family and close friends. If your child is older, distance learning offers him a chance to choose his friends free of social pressures. The bonds formed while doing distance learning will never dissolve, and will provide crucial support during those potentially unsettled teenage years. The resulting confidence will enable young adults to resist pressure from peers, and they will be propelled into adulthood with a strong sense of self. This strength will last a lifetime.

Teachers

Teachers at Laurel Springs work one-on-one with each student, providing both academic and emotional support. Throughout the school year, each student corresponds with and is assisted by the same teacher, not a variety of teachers. This communication builds a relationship of encouragement, allowing the student to grow at his or her own pace. Chosen for their ability to advise and support Laurel Springs students and their families, our teachers grade each lesson with care. They note and respond to each student's areas of need with expertise and compassion.

Learning Styles

Learning Styles assessment is an important opportunity to understand your child's unique ways of learning. Laurel Springs provides a complete program for assessing five aspects of a Learning Style: Learning Personality, Talents, Interests, Modality, and Preferred Environment. The program includes step-by-step instructions for creating an educational plan that encourages your child's full potential. Most important, you'll help your child excel not only in school, but in life as well.

Testimonials

I don't know if I would choose to use the word confident, because I wasn't lacking confidence when I came to Laurel Springs. I had already written a good deal of essays, between two and six hundred words long, before I came here. I would say that I was more enthusiastic about writing the essays, because I had a great teacher who actually cared about reading them.

Happy to reply, and highly recommend Laurel Springs School to anyone looking for an accredited distance learning program that offers University of California honors-accepted courses at the high school level. My (only) daughter used Laurel Springs last year, her crucial junior year of high school (as far as college acceptance goes), while our family sailed from California to Mexico and then across the Pacific ocean to Tahiti for 10 months. She was able to enroll in every class she would have had at her home high school, including the honors courses. Before we set sail, she was able to complete the Honors Oceanography course online -- she really learned a lot (it was Òjust for fun'!), it was easily accessible (I could log on at any time and see her progress as well as the teacher's feedback--much more than I ever get at her public school!), and the teacher was totally "hands on" as far as comments about her work directed to her...and not some generic audience.

I want to thank you for everything you have done for me and for putting up such a great school program. It has given me the best opportunity to develop as a student and as a person. I received a likely letter from the University of Pennsylvania stating that I will be accepted Early Decision to the Wharton Business School. My whole family is thrilled and we want to thank you for participating in this life-transition. You can now take pride in putting yet another Laurel Springs student to an Ivy League education! Thanks again for everything.

Laurel Springs School prepares seniors especially for college by putting their work into their own hands. As a student of Laurel Springs, I learned how to teach myself and have enough discipline to complete all my assignments. In the end, I gained great confidence in my work and abilities.

High School Curriculum

Online or Text-based

Curriculum Our high school curriculum provides students with courses and electives required for graduation while making learning a personal experience. We empower our students with the skills to "learn how to learn." Students can prepare for college, complete Honors-level work, or make up courses missed due to extenuating circumstances. Our focus is on an active style of learning available through online excursions or carefully selected texts. Through independent research, students become creative thinkers with increased self-esteem and self-confidence. High school students choose from text or web-based curricula in College Prep, Honors, and UC Approved courses.

High School Diploma

Students can construct a high school curriculum for either general education or for entrance to college. Students earn a standard academic diploma upon completing 225 units (credits) of academic and elective courses. Of the two programs, the college-preparatory program requires more academic courses. Students earn 10 units (1 year) of credit for each 36-week course.

Graduation

SAT Prep Course

Laurel Springs School uses the award winning Peterson's SAT Online Technology, this course provides high-quality instruction that is completely customized to each student, pinpointing the student's abilities on the skills that are tested in the actual exam. A Customized Learning Path is then created to strengthen the student's areas of weakness and reinforce and provide extra challenge in areas of strength. Students progress through the course at their own pace, whenever their schedules allow. Available 24/7 from any location with technical and academic support available around the clock, both by online or toll-free hotline.

Elementary and Junior High Curriculum

Elementary curriculum All children learn and grow in different ways. No single approach is exactly right for every child, and our program reflects that. Our curriculum promotes the development of critical-thinking skills. Students learn to think independently and to learn how to learn. Through our research-based lessons, students become creative thinkers with increased self-esteem and self-confidence. Distance learning with Laurel Springs allows you to choose a combination of classes specifically suited to your child. We offer four different curricular styles to meet your needs: choice-based, project-based, text-based and web-based.
